NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A Newport News man accused in two recent robberies was arrested with the assistance of a citizen, according to police.

Police spokeswoman Holly McPherson told WAVY.com Joshua Mumford went to relative's home in the 12500 block of Warwick Blvd. around 3 p.m. on Oct. 7. When the 64-year-old resident answered the door, police say Mumford pushed the door open, knocking the victim to the ground. Mumford is accused of then hitting the victim in the face and stealing money from his wallet.

The next day, just before midnight, police say a 54-year-old Smithfield woman was leaving a Subway restaurant at 10868 Warwick Blvd. when someone pushed her from behind. The suspect grabbed her purse then fled.  A man in the area heard the woman scream then saw the suspect running with a purse, so he took off after the suspect. He chased him into a wooded area where he waited until police arrived.

Officers arrested Joshua Mumford, 36, and charged him with burglary and two counts robbery.
