Burglary suspects caught minutes after

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Three burglary suspects are in custody after a detective spotted the vehicle they were traveling in Tuesday afternoon.

Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department told WAVY.com officers received a call for a burglary in the 300 block of Marlboro Road around 12:20 p.m. A witness reported two suspects entered a home and left with a white safe. The suspects then reportedly got into a brown pickup truck and left.

A detective spotted the vehicle in the area of Jefferson Avenue and Operations Drive and began following it. Officers were able to pull the truck over at Jefferson Avenue and Hogan Drive about 10 minutes later.

According to Thurston, Benjamin Harris, 32, James Lee, 25, and James Batchelor, 20, were detained and an officer found a white safe in the truck. The victim was able to arrive on scene and identified their property.

The three men were all charged with burglary, grand larceny, conspiracy to commit burglary, conspiracy to commit grand larceny and possession of burglary tools.
