Two VB-based Navy divers die in Md.

BALTIMORE, Md. (WAVY) - The two Virginia Beach-based sailors died following routine diving operations in Maryland Tuesday have been identified.

According to the Navy, the two men were part of Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 2 based out of Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story.

The men have been identified as Navy Diver 1st Class James Reyher, 28, of Caldwell, Ohio and Navy Diver 2nd Class Ryan Harris, 23 of Gladstone, Mo. 

The diving incident happened at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen, Maryland. According to Lt. Nathan Potter with the Navy, one man was declared dead at the scene and another man was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Potter said the Navy cannot get into specifics about what happened because Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Group 2 is conducting an investigation. 

Potter said MDSU-2 is the salvage diving component of EOD Group 2. He said they respond to salvage operations on the east coast and overseas.

The Baltimore Sun reports the deaths happened in a testing facility called the "Super Pond." A Harford County emergency responder told the Sun the divers went into cardiac arrest. 

They were using air hoses and tethered to each other.

Harris joined the Navy in June 2007, and joined MDSU-2 in June 2011. Reyher enlisted in May 2008, and joined MDSU-2 in April 2012.

One veteran member told 10 On Your Side said they don't remember ever losing a diver before the incident Tuesday. The MDSU-2 group responded to the massive bridge collapse in Minnesota in 2007.

According to the AP, an engineering technician died at Aberdeen Proving Ground's Army site, while completing routine underwater maintenance.
