NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - The USS Delaware, being built in Newport News, has officially been named by the Secretary of the Navy with Jill Biden as its sponsor.
According to a press release from the Navy, the USS Delaware will be the 7th ship of its namesake for the U.S. Navy.
"I chose the name Delaware to honor the long-standing relationship between the Navy and our nation's first state," Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said. "It has been too long since there has been a USS Delaware in the fleet and this submarine will remind future deployed service members and state residents of their strong ties and many shared values for decades to come."
USS Delaware is set to have "enhanced stealth, sophisticated surveillance capabilities and special warfare enhancements."
The submarine will be constructed at Huntington Ingalls Industries in Newport News.
