Ft. Eustis deserter arrested in SC

DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WAVY) - A Fort Eustis deserter was investigated for explosives, shutting down an interstate in South Carolina on Tuesday afternoon. 

According to WAVY affiliate WMBF , the eastbound lanes of I-20 were reopened at approximately 6 p.m. after bomb technicians investigated the materials found in the man's vehicle.

Officers believed the man may have been carrying a homemade bomb because several wires were hanging around his trunk.

WMBF reports the materials were "five to seven plastic jugs containing a flammable liquid, each jug ranging from three to give gallons in size."

A bomb squad and bomb squad robot removed the jugs from the car's trunk and later determined the liquid was gasoline. During this search, both sides of the interstate were shut down.

According to Capt. Andy Locklear with the Darlington Sheriff's Office, 19-year-old Andrew Jackson led investigators to believe he was going to harm himself, although no triggering device was found in the car.

Jackson, of Jacksonville, Fl. was arrested for marijuana possession and will be held at the Darlington County Detention Center until he faces charges for desertion.
