SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The crew of the Coast Guard Harriet Lane, which is homeported in Portsmouth, Va., assisted in the rescue of an entangled sea turtle.
The crew was serving about the Coast Guard Cutter Legare off the coast of Puerto Rico Thursday when a watch stander spotted an object bobbing in the water. The crew got closer and determined it was a large sea turtle entangled in pieces of discarded fishing gear.
Crew members maneuvered a smaller boat next to the trapped sea turtle, cut away the net and freed the animal.
According to the Coast Guard, the sea turtle appeared to sustain only minor injuries to its left flipper.
