HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - Heavy rain moved through the area during the overnight and early morning hours.
Some areas across North Carolina and Hampton Roads saw up to an inch and a half of rain, creating major problems during the morning commute.
Chief Deputy Steve Hoggard with the Dare County Sheriff's Office told WAVY.com Highway 12 in Oregon Inlet was closed due to water on the roadway. There was reports of 2' of water on the road at Mirlo Beach.
The roadway reopened around 9 a.m.
The rain should taper off as the day goes on, but the winds will pick up.
The storm system is expected to bring up to 3' of snow in some parts of New England and a blizzard warning is in effect for much of the northeast. Dominion Virginia Power crews will be heading up north to assist power companies with any outages they're expecting to receive.
