SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (CNN/KTVX) - Stuck in a tunnel for days. No food. No water. A broken leg. No cellphone either. What would you do?

"I really thought I was going to die," said Daniel Samuelsen.

The 33-year-old spent three nights alone, trapped in a tunnel in the foothills east of Salt Lake City. Samuelsen says he was hiking when he fell into the tunnel.

"I went down at an incline like this, just at full speed, and I hit the bottom of that and I heard the crack with my right leg and I put my hand down there to grab it, to feel what was wrong and could literally feel the bone protruding out of my leg," said Samuelsen.

His leg broke in the fall. His cellphone was dead.

"I took some rocks and banged them up against the side of the tunnel and I screamed for help," he said.

But no one could hear his screams. After four days with no food or water since the fall, the starving and thirsty hiker had to do something.

"I found a piece of wood I thought I could use as a splint and I tied it to my leg and decided that the only way I was going to survive was to get myself out of there," said Samuelsen.

He began to crawl. Two hours later, he saw a man on the highway.

"I've never been happier to see a human being," he said.
