PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (CNN/KOMO) - A newspaper in Washington state says it was hoodwinked into reporting a fake story on a string of holes-in-one.

When the Kitsap Sun heard about one group of guys at McCormack Woods hitting four aces in one round, they figured what a story. Reporter Jeff Graham interviewed the people involved, confirmed the story, and wrote an article.

The story defied logic, but there it was in the newspaper. Only one problem - it didn't happen.

Depending who you talk to, it was either a misunderstanding, a hoax, or a dirty rotten lie.

Cris Larsen has a tournament every year called The Great Googly Ball Tournament.

"A googly is you hit the ball and then you can pick it up and roll it in," said Larsen.

But Larsen didn't tell the reporter the googly part of the four aces story. Why? Larsen says he's a "comedian." Reporter Graham wrote that "was deception."

The Sun says it learned of the deception when the editor heard Larsen telling a local Rotary Club he'd pulled one over on the newspaper.
