PORTSMOUTH, Va. - The Christmas clutter may still be hanging around your house, but it's time to move it out!

It's the perfect time to start the process, as it is 'National Get Organized Month.'

Amy Volk with Simplified Living is here to help us manage our space.

5 rules for clutter-free living:
*Do I love this?
*Do I need this?
*Does this add value to my life?
*I can have or keep whatever I want, but whatever I keep I must manage it.
*Do these/this choice(s) make my life simpler or complicated?

Top Three Organizing Tips:
*De-clutter: Throw out anything that you don't absolutely love and need.
*Group remaining items into like-minded categories.
*Don't buy more stuff!
*Live simply. Too much stuff steals time from the people and activities you value the most.

Ways to get started:
*Pick one room at a time to work on.
*Begin by sorting, followed by purging. Do not move to another room or stop until all purging is done. Remember the 5 rules of clutter-free living.
*Decide what function you want that room to have.
*Give yourself a time limit to work on that room.
*Don't get discouraged by the slow process. It always takes longer than you think.
*Hire a professional organizer if it gets too daunting!
