NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Sentara Healthcare's merger with a 183-bed hospital in northern Virginia is now official, following reviews by state and federal officials.

The Norfolk-based healthcare system said Wednesday that the Federal Trade Commission and the Virginia attorney general's office have approved its affiliation with Potomac Hospital.

The merger is expected to provide needed resources for the struggling independent hospital in Woodbridge and further expand Sentara's health system, according to officials from both organizations.

Sentara has agreed to invest $92 million in a foundation to address health needs of Prince William-area residents and also help bolster the infrastructure of the hospital, which will now be called Sentara Potomac Hospital.
