MOYOCK, NC - This year looked like it was going to end on a high note for April Hurst and her family. After suffering through tough economic times, they were able to enjoy Christmas at home.
"Two days ago," remembered Hurst, "we were opening up Christmas presents and my daughter had the most presents you could ever see on the table."
With only a few days left until the new year, there was hope that a change in the calendar would bring a change of fortune.
But not before one more stroke of hardship.
"It's just crazy how I can look back now and say that was just there a couple of hours ago," Hurst said.
Early Saturday morning, fire ravaged April's home, starting in the room she was sleeping in with her baby daughter. April's father tried to put out the flames but they were spreading too quickly. The only option was to escape outside and hope something could be salvaged afterwards.
The flames gutted an entire half of the home, burning through walls and floors. Only a charred shell was left. Every piece of the remains was scorched.
Viewers touched by the story of the Hurst family decided they could help and offered to donate a mobile home. The Hursts say they're grateful for the offer and hope to see their new home soon.
