CHESAPEAKE, Va. - A Chesapeake man is ready and set for trial in the death of a police officer. Monday, the man accused of killing a Chesapeake detective made his final court appearance, before his trial.
It's been almost a year since Detective Jarrod Shivers' death. Police say he was shot by Ryan Frederick while serving a drug warrant.
The next time Ryan Frederick walks into a courtroom it will be in front of a jury of his peers and his fate will be left in their hands.
"Obviously the jury selection will be very significant," said attorney James Broccoletti. "That may take a day or two. It depends."
James Brocoletti has claimed all along that Frederick didn't know police were outside his Chesapeake home. Detectives were serving a drug warrant. Police say as they were going into the house Frederick shot and killed Officer Jarrod Shivers.
Monday, the final pre-trial details were ironed out. Both sides say they're ready to proceed. This all happening as Shiver's widow Nicole sat quietly in the courtroom. Off camera she told WAVY.com she is doing okay. It's been a long year for everyone involved. Many questions surrounding the case remain, including details about the police informant. According to court records, he was the man who broke into Frederick's home prior to the shooting death of Detective Shivers. Broccoletti maintains it was that informant who collected evidence the night of the break in and turned it over to police. That led to officers getting the warrant.
The trail will begin January 20, the same day as the Inauguration. After some debate whether to postpone the start date, everyone decided to proceed as planned.
"It was just to burdensome on the court and try to reschedule everybody," added Brocoletti. "There's over 100 people coming on Tuesday and to reschedule them to come on Wednesday was just to burdensome.
