PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVBT) - Lots of folks are getting ready to run the Shamrock Marathon: an elite level of physical fitness.

What you might not know is: Physical fitness isn't that different from Financial Fitness. Avid runner and BayPort Credit Union Vice President of Finance, Lewis Smith, explains some of the similarities.

Long Term Approach and Discipline.
· Have a plan and stick to the plan
· Think Marathon not Sprint
· Actually feels really good to have a goal and achieve it

if I have others to hold me accountable more likely to do it.
· Coaches or Mentors - just like in athletics- use financial counselors, BayPort Financial, MSRs, we have great staff to talk things over with
· Also programs like our free Quicken FinanceWorks - use your debit card or credit card and create a trail that you can follow spending

And with both routes... people should expect to have to make a few adjustments.
· Life is not perfect - every plan will need adjustments
· Look at our recent economy and the adjustments we had to make - same with a Marathon - you work hard but come race day Hampton Roads weather changes to 78 degrees - you better make some adjustments

It can be a challenge to have fun exercising in the beginning.
- Most people can do things if they think of it like a game or challenge..
- Whether getting through your exercise or making a financial goal to win!
