PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVBT) - The work force is about to get a whole new class of college graduates with degree in hand, and looking for work.

When you are from a pool of thousands, what can you do as a brand new college grad to stand out in the crowd? Wendy Brown, Vice President of Human Resources at BayPort Credit Union, gives us some practical advice.

First Impressions
Appearance

  • Dress appropriately for the position you are interviewing for
  • Pay special attention to personal hygiene and your choice of clothing

Greeting

  • Ssmile, make eye contact, firm handshake
  • - be relaxed, friendly and business-like with everyone you come into contact with
  • Interview Content

Preparation

  • Practice answering questions with a friend or family member
  • Know about the company you're interviewing with and why you want to work for the company
  • Bring a copy of your resume, references, letters of recommendation

Confidence

  • Use positive body language (maintain eye contact, keep your hands in your lap, and sit up straight)
  • Stay on topic and ask for clarification where necessary and when appropriate
  • Use specific examples rather than general statements when giving information about education, training, skills and work experience

Interview Skills/Techniques

Eye Contact

  • -Focus on the interviewer
  • Don't let your eyes wander - this indicates a lack of confidence

Language and Grammar

  • Speak clearly and not too fast
  • Speak without out using slang

Closing

Express you interest in the position and company.

  •  Ask questions you prepared to ask the interviewer.
  •  Ask when you should hear back from the interviewer.
